Later, Pommaux draws Pasiphaë climbing into a hollow cow “to get closer to the white bull” that Poseidon has made her fall in love with soon after, she gives birth to the Minotaur. up in a watery embrace” by the god while bathing. “Unable to resist passions,” Theseus’s mother-to-be, Aethra, is “swept. Like many myths, Theseus’s legend has a few details that require some sensitivity when recasting the story for younger audiences. From there, Pommaux offers clean pencil-and-ink images that range from small horizontal panels to larger scenes, colored in pale tan, green, pink, and blue. Perhaps referencing the oral traditions through which the myths were first disseminated, the story is bookended by nighttime scenes on a boat in the Aegean Sea, where an elderly man recounts Theseus’s story to a boy and girl. French author-artist Pommaux offers a solid graphic retelling of the life of Theseus, first published in France.

I managed to read 10 books, which seems like a decent amount, but I read a lot of shorter books, sneaking in a poetry collection in the final day. Having said that, I did buy a way fewer books than I did in the first quarter last year.Ĭonsidering my reading was down this month because of reasons I am quite happy that I read as much as I did. All my intentions of buying fewer books seemed to have fallen by the wayside. So, progress in bringing my TBR down is clearly not going well. I still managed to read some good books though, so it’s not all bad! My brain was too scattered to concentrate for much of the month. This month was not a great month from a personal point of view and my reading suffered as a result. o I press my lips drowning to your neckAnd it stay there and I reconnectBaby we have been trying to be perfectIt can wait for a whileScared of hoping out of. ng hard deathCause I hear in you all mineSo I press my lips drowning to. This article is about the 2023 animated film. However, we decided to keep the second book because, again, I love the content and idea, and my one-year-old daughter (who loves animals and will love this book) won't care that it's twisted and has a scratch. I'm disappointed that this is the quality of book that we got for what we paid. There is also a scratch/dent on the top of the second book (second picture). We exchanged the book through Amazon for free (much appreciated!) but when the second book arrived, it was better but still slightly twisted, which you can kind of see if the first and third pictures. The first book we got wasn't straight/flat and seemed like it had been sitting under something heavy for a long time because the shape of the book was crooked/twisted (see the last photo). What made me take off stars is the experience and quality of the book. The animals, foods, and illustrations are all unique and a fun spin on ABC books. I was really torn between 2 and 3 stars on this book (originally put 2 but bumped it to 3 because it’s a really cute book). During that time, he also wrote manuals on fixing trucks and had a stint as a journalist (a job he did not return to until after he became a successful novelist). After writing for the local newspaper for a short while, he began working for Freightliner as a diesel mechanic, continuing in that job until his writing career took off. While attending college he worked as an intern for National Public Radio member station KLCC in Eugene, Oregon. In his twenties, Palahniuk attended the University of Oregon's School of Journalism, graduating in 1986. His parents later separated and divorced, often leaving him and his three siblings to live with their grandparents at their cattle ranch in Eastern Washington. The ideas behind this book are amazing and the story is pretty good. I honestly had no expectations going in, was angry when I thought it was a Tower of Heaven Rip-off, and eventually came to embrace the MC, the setting, and the story. It is that extra bit that makes a good narrator stand out. Stubbs really narrates well, and manages to convey everything that Kerr put into the story, plus a little more, I think. He was hardcore and a font of knowledge that simply gave him an edge. What could have come across as imbalanced simply played well with the character and the story. I didn’t even feel like the MC was over powered, and was happy when he retained skills that he’d trained for when the clock was reset. The book is well paced, smartly written, has some cool progression powers and is draped in an appropriately apocalyptic setting. As I said, it starts off in the vein Towers of heaven but then neatly shifts into a book of its own. The MC was interesting and he was playing the “I know the future card” very close to the vest. So much that I am pressed to say that it might be a little bit better flow wise. The book quickly differentiated itself from Tower of Heaven and stood on its own. So close it is scary as in I was ready to make accusations of plagiarism, but I kept listening. Basically the first chapter is practically identical Cameron Milan’s Tower of Heaven novel. I’m gonna tell ya, this book almost threw me into a right anxious fit. Like many kids of the time, he had become fascinated with what were then called the "Mysteries of the Orient". Keel was born Alva John Kiehle in Hornell, New York in 1930. But on the other hand, because of John there's one topic that everyone - and we mean everyone has heard about. After all, his writings - both in his early years and later - tended to be rather specialized and directed toward non-mainstream audiences. This included, of course, how to charm a cobra.Īlthough the snake charming story (plus another one we'll get to later) pushed John to temporary celebrity in India, he is not well known to the general public today. John had been traveling throughout the Middle and Far East and was supporting himself by writing magazine articles about what he saw and learned. In India the story brought considerable - and in some ways unwelcome - fame to John A. Titled "Yank Snake Charmer", the story was accompanied by a photograph of a young man in a t-shirt and pith helmet who was, yes, charming a cobra. In the spring of 1955, the Times of India printed an article in their Sunday society section. Understanding these complexities helps to have a more nuanced understanding of the role of ethnicity in post-Communist societies, in terms of kin-state and intrastate relations.Įxisting analyses of kin-state relations have focused only on cases where kin communities comprise local minorities and have analysed relations primarily from top-down perspectives, by examining only the state-level actors and institutions involved. Conclusions: To understand fully the relations between kin majorities, their kin-state and home-state and the impact of growing kin engagement policies, like dual citizenship, it is necessary to analyze the complexities of the lived experience of kin identification for members of kin majorities and how this relates to kin-state identification and affiliation. Respondents identified more in terms of assemblages of ethnic, cultural, political, linguistic, and territorial identities than in mutually exclusive census categories. Results: Ethnic homogeneity for kin majorities is more fractured that previously considered. Methods: The article is based on ∼50 fieldwork interviews conducted in both Moldova and Crimea with everyday social actors (2012–2013). Objective: This article investigates what kin identification means from a bottom-up perspective in two kin majority cases: Moldova and Crimea. |
